Day in the Life

As a plumbing apprentice, no two days are exactly the same. Whether it’s a new home build, a commercial property, or a repair call, you assist with tasks like cutting and fitting pipes, learning how to install fixtures, and troubleshooting leaks or drainage issues. Along the way, you’re gaining hands-on experience and applying classroom knowledge in real-world settings to lay the foundation for a reliable and well-paying career.

Introduction to Plumbing Principles

Learn the basic math skills for the plumbing trade, terminology, and systems.

International Plumbing Code

Gain a solid understanding of the International Plumbing Code, its layout, and the requirements for different plumbing systems.

Safety

Learn basic safety and first aid, including the OSHA 10-hour safety course, to help recognize and prevent hazards.

Plans and Materials

Learn to read and interpret blueprints, identify and select fixtures, lavatories, showers, and bathtubs, and assemble various joints.

Water Systems

Learn the size of water supply systems, preventing backflow, intermediate math skills for calculating offsets and water pressure, and water heaters.

Pipe Systems

Learn to interpret and sketch isometric pipe drawings, residential plumbing blueprints, drainage systems, and indirect waste piping.

Potential Career Paths

Journeyman Plumber

Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and fixtures in both residential and commercial settings.

Master Plumber (further training needed)

Highest level of licensed plumber, possessing advanced knowledge and skills in plumbing systems, codes, and regulations.

Program Overview

The Plumbing Apprenticeship program meets the educational requirements for taking the state Journeyman Plumber exam. To complete the entire Apprentice Plumbing program, an individual must be licensed through the State and work under the supervision of a licensed Journeyman Plumber. A basic assessment is required prior to enrolling. This program provides a solid understanding of the International Plumbing Code (IPC), its layout, and the requirements for different plumbing systems and parts of those systems. This program discusses the processes, parts, and risks involved with the various plumbing systems, as well as the safety equipment and measures that are in place to protect plumbers and the public alike.

The Plumbing Apprenticeship coursework prepares students to take the state plumbing journey-level licensing exam.

Christina Bischoff

Christina joined 91 in 2019 as the Utah Aerospace Pathway Coordinator. Soon after stepping into the role, she took on pathway programs for Industrial Automation, Construction, Automotive, and Composites. As the pathway coordinator, she worked directly with students, instructors, and industry representatives, coordinating all aspects of 91’s pathway programs. In 2022, Christina took on the role of program coordinator for the Plumbing and Union Apprenticeship programs, where she continued her track record of building strong relationships with various stakeholders. She deeply believes in the college’s mission and goes the extra mile to help students succeed. Christina grew up in the Ogden area and completed her Associate’s degree at Weber State University. In her free time, Christina likes to check out local events and care for her 30+ houseplants.
